Sew or mend something 20 times. (9/20)

The sewing machine jammed again, but this time it wasn't because my eight year old fingers had pushed too much fabric through the machine. My mom clearly couldn't hear me screaming because she didn't magically appear upon first yelp. My little sister joined the chorus as she flew up the stairs lightning fast to call in the calvary. I sat there biting my lip whimpering and mustering up my brave spirit to inspect the needle. Yes, it went all the way through and my finger was trapped. Mom appeared dripping wet wearing just a towel. With her wizard like skills she got the needle out and assured me it hadn't hit the bone. Just like that I perceived myself as a veteran seamstress.
I went on to sew every chance I had. I loved my silk pillow cases. I was so proud of my middle-school homemade outfits with the matching scrunchies. My burgundy taffeta prom dress was to die for! I interviewed for a job at Nordstroms wearing my own custom designed dress and got the job! In college I turned my sewing skills towards making spare cash. Choir dresses, entire sets of bridesmaids dresses, and altering wedding gowns. My favorite was hemming the pants of guys, especially if they were cute.
My first home was adorned with raw silk curtains in the living room and Roman shades in the kitchen.
Then I had a baby.
It was at that moment the sewing machine was tucked away for almost twenty years. It was nothing personal against my sewing machine. I just gained an overnight appreciation for the value sleep and sanity. The machine has followed me faithfully to the dark closets of four houses before it made it's resurrection in 2020.

The rules for this 20-20 goal.

7 - Up-cycle a dress into a blouse for my niece's wedding.
I wanted to look great but also wanted my spare cash go towards her wedding. With health issues causing weight gain my fancy clothes no longer looked classy on my frame. So I took this pencil dress and converted it to a top that was beautiful on me!

8 - Custom fit masks for me and my hubby.
This is the JoAnne Fabrics pattern using the currently recommended double-layer of 100% quilter’s cotton. I’m amazed at how surprisingly different peoples face shapes and sizes are and stores are out of stock for elastic, so I handmade the ties you see around the ears And custom fit their length and angles.
Batman is for my hubby, Looney Tunes is of course

9 - Upcycled top into custom super soft stretchy mask
Kids aren’t particularly into wearing masks yet. I don’t blame them. My kiddo requested a black mask with a little red on it. I was able to repurpose this shirt. His turned out so great and comfortable that I think I’m going to make more Out of the remaining fabric.
